Changelog
v0.24.4 · 2026-07-09
Tidier phone layout
- In the deductions breakdown on phones, the legend under the donut chart is now centred instead of leaving a gap on the right.
v0.24.3 · 2026-07-09
No more surprise zoom on phones
- Tapping a form field on iPhone no longer zooms the whole page in (and leaves it zoomed): input text is now slightly larger on small screens, which stops iOS Safari's automatic zoom-on-focus.
v0.24.2 · 2026-07-05
Sharper details
- The currency choice is now a one-tap £ / $ / ¥ switch, matching the language toggle, instead of a dropdown.
- Scenario comparison cards now include weekly take-home.
- The Tax Explorer's chart titles match the calculator's card headings.
- Clearer dividers between the PDF report's sections.
- On tablet-width screens the navigation now collapses to the compact menu before anything can be cut off.
v0.24.1 · 2026-07-05
Polish across the site
- Yuan figures now show a plain ¥ instead of the verbose CN¥.
- The PDF's inputs and deductions breakdown each get the full page width, so the donut and its legend have room to breathe.
- Larger, easier-to-read figures in the calculator's payslip summary and scenario-comparison cards.
- Long pages (Methodology, Tax year, Privacy, Changelog) show a floating back-to-top button once you scroll.
- The Tax Explorer now uses exactly the calculator's width, so switching between the two pages no longer shifts the layout.
v0.24.0 · 2026-07-05
Read your results in dollars or yuan
- A new display-currency switch on the results panel shows every result figure in US dollars or Chinese yuan, converted at a clearly-labelled indicative rate.
- Tax is always calculated in pounds — conversion is for reading only, and your inputs, share links, CSV, and PDF stay in GBP.
- Rates ship with the app (no lookups leave your browser) and show their as-of date next to the converted figures.
v0.23.0 · 2026-07-04
A clearer PDF report
- The PDF report leads with the three figures that matter — gross pay, annual take-home (front and centre), and effective tax rate — followed by your inputs and the deductions breakdown side by side.
- A payslip-style table shows gross, deductions, and net income across annual, monthly, weekly, and daily periods.
- Fractional pay now prints exactly: a £15.50 hourly rate no longer appears as £16.
- Assumptions, warnings, and the disclaimer moved to small print at the bottom, so notes never interrupt the numbers.
v0.22.0 · 2026-07-04
Tax Explorer joins the dashboard
- The Tax Explorer now uses the same layout as the calculator: the logo tops the settings sidebar and the navigation sits in a card above the charts.
- Explorer settings are grouped into three cards — Income tax basis; Pension, loans & NI; and Your salary — matching the calculator's sidebar.
- The Methodology, Privacy, Changelog, and Tax year pages now present their content on the same card material as the dashboards.
v0.21.0 · 2026-07-04
One frame across the site
- The Methodology, Privacy, Changelog, and Tax year pages now share the calculator's floating rounded navigation card instead of a full-width bar, and it stays gently in view as you scroll.
- The language switch no longer changes height between pages — 中文 stays on one line and the control matches the theme button.
- Every page now ends with the same footer, including a copyright line.
v0.20.0 · 2026-07-03
More accurate relief-at-source pensions
- Relief-at-source pensions now receive higher-rate and allowance-taper relief consistently: the tax band limits are extended by your gross contribution, matching your true annual liability.
- Previously, higher-rate relief-at-source scenarios overstated income tax by 20% of the gross contribution, which also made relief at source look worse than salary sacrifice or net pay in comparisons.
- The methodology page documents the new treatment (and the Scottish approximation).
v0.19.1 · 2026-07-03
Codebase audit: saved-scenario safety, tax codes, and privacy
- Saved scenarios can no longer be wiped wholesale: if one saved scenario fails validation (for example a name cleared mid-rename), the others are now recovered instead of everything silently resetting to the defaults.
- Duplicating a scenario with a very long name now caps the copy at the 60-character limit, so the saved state still reloads.
- K tax codes issued on an emergency week-1/month-1 basis (such as K497X or K497 M1) are now recognised instead of being rejected as unsupported.
- The Tax Explorer's allowance-taper trap band now starts at the correct salary for tax codes that grant less than the full Personal Allowance (for example 1000L); it previously shaded from £0.
- The Tax Explorer's legend toggles are visible to screen readers again, and the chart summary is announced as text.
- Shareable-link scenario data is now stripped from the page addresses reported to Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights; the privacy page documents this.
- A crafted share link can no longer crash the calculator via a specially chosen tax-year value.
v0.19.0 · 2026-06-27
Chrome extension: estimate take-home from any job listing
- Highlight a salary on a job page, right-click "Estimate take-home pay", and see your estimated annual and monthly take-home in an overlay card — no copy-pasting into the calculator.
- The extension reads the posting to detect your region (England/NI, Scotland, or Wales) and any stated pension contribution, falling back to England/NI and a 5% pension when they aren't found.
- Salary ranges show both the low and high end, and you can save several jobs and open them together in the full calculator to compare.
v0.18.0 · 2026-06-26
More of the site speaks 中文
- The methodology and privacy pages are now fully translated when you switch to 中文.
- The statutory band names on the tax year page (Personal Allowance, Basic rate, and so on) are now translated too.
v0.17.2 · 2026-06-26
Tax year page now speaks 中文
- The Tax year 2026/27 page — its headings, table columns, and region names — is now translated when you switch to 中文.
v0.17.1 · 2026-06-26
Accessibility and sharing fixes
- The chart's screen-reader description no longer mentions an allowance-taper trap for tax codes that don't have one (BR, D0, D1, NT).
- The “Link copied” confirmation now appears only when the link was actually copied to your clipboard.
v0.17.0 · 2026-06-26
Tax code fixes: Marriage Allowance and K codes
- Marriage Allowance tax codes (ending in M or N, e.g. 1257M) are now supported instead of being rejected as unsupported.
- K tax codes now apply HMRC's 50%-of-pay cap, so the estimated income tax can no longer exceed half of your gross pay.
v0.16.2 · 2026-06-24
Redesigned PDF report
- Saving a PDF now produces a clean, branded one-page report — logo, your inputs, your results, the full deductions breakdown, and a comparison table — instead of a print of the on-screen layout.
- Fixed a bug where the deductions breakdown in the PDF showed only the take-home row.
v0.16.1 · 2026-06-24
Safer CSV exports
- CSV exports now open with the correct characters in Excel, including 中文 labels.
- Scenario names that begin with a spreadsheet formula character are exported as plain text, so opening a CSV can't run an unexpected formula.
v0.16.0 · 2026-06-23
Export to PDF and CSV
- You can now download your breakdown — and the full comparison when you have more than one scenario — as a CSV for spreadsheets, or save it as a PDF via your browser's print dialog.
- Exports are generated entirely in your browser; no salary data leaves your device.
v0.15.1 · 2026-06-20
Validation tweaks: bonus and pension
- A negative bonus is now caught and flagged, just like a negative salary.
- An unusually large pension contribution (50% or more of salary) now raises a gentle warning to help catch typos.
v0.15.0 · 2026-06-20
Inline input validation
- Every input now shows clear, inline feedback: red errors for values that can't be calculated (like a negative salary or an unsupported tax code), and amber warnings for valid-but-caveated cases (K codes, emergency codes, large pension contributions).
- A scenario with an error shows a 'fix the field' note instead of a misleading figure.
- Tax-code and validation messages are now fully translated in 中文.
v0.14.1 · 2026-06-19
Fix hidden mobile menu button
- The hamburger menu button no longer slips off the right edge on narrow phones in English, where the longer page label had pushed it out of view.
v0.14.0 · 2026-06-19
Unified site navigation
- The calculator now shares one navigation system with the rest of the site.
- On narrow screens the calculator's nav merges into a single top bar with a hamburger menu, instead of stranding links in the middle of the page.
- Privacy and Changelog now live in the footer on every page.
v0.13.0 · 2026-06-14
Rebranded to Palculator
- The app is now called Palculator, with the tagline "Know what you keep".
- Page titles keep the descriptive "UK take-home salary calculator" subtitle for search.
v0.12.0 · 2026-06-13
Salary tier tables and a mobile navigation menu
- Tax year page now shows gross salary tiers with the rate for each tier, including a 0% Personal Allowance tier.
- Added a National Insurance contributions rate table to the tax year page.
- Navigation collapses into a hamburger menu on small screens, keeping the current page, language, and theme controls visible.
v0.11.0 · 2026-06-13
Tax Explorer crosshair and persistent values card
- Snap-to-curve crosshair with live axis pills.
- The "You" card stays put once a salary is entered.
- Plateau-based step detection removes the Scottish staircase artefact.

- Clickable legend shows or hides each scenario.
v0.9.0 · 2026-06-13

- Grouped settings panel with a tax-code control.
- Effective rate shown in the chart tooltip; charts grow to fill the column.
- Added a "Key terms" glossary to the methodology page.
v0.8.0 · 2026-06-13
Marginal rate as a true step function
- The Tax Explorer marginal-rate line now renders as discrete steps rather than a sloped line.
v0.7.0 · 2026-06-12
Tax Explorer
- New Tax Explorer page: take-home and marginal-rate curves across salary, with scenario pinning.
v0.6.0 · 2026-06-11
